How to Build a Habit if You Don’t Have Time

“I can’t start a fitness routine, I just don’t have time to build a habit” Oh my lanta, if I had a dollar for every time I heard this I would be rich and have someone else write these blog posts for me! How many of you want to start a new habit or something that fuels you but you just don’t have time? Too many I’m sure!

You’re excited to start new habits to work towards your health and wellness! You write out your plan that you’re going to wake up early, go to the gym, exercise for an hour, eat healthy and be in bed by 10PM each day. But then you second guess yourself. You start off great for 2 days but then it spirals backwards.

How to build a habit if you don't have time. Healthy eating goals.

Here come the Excuses

  • I don’t have time to get in a 60 minute workout.

  • Work’s too busy right now.

  • There’s too many unhealthy options at work

  • I’m not a morning person

  • I can’t afford the gym

  • I don’t know where to start

Start with just 5 minutes

That first excuse, that’s where I stopped and thought, wait when was it stated that we have to workout for an hour a day or it doesn’t count? Or that we need to do a certain type of exercise. What about just starting? Starting with 5 minutes. Hop on your Peloton and just tell yourself “today I will commit to 5 minutes” or go take a walk around the block for 5 minutes. That’s it for just a short amount of time. Everyone has that and don’t try and tell me you don’t spend that time scrolling social media or binging the latest Netflix series.

How to build a habit if you don't have time. Just start small.

I feel we sometimes look at someone else’s journey and don’t realize they’re on day 300. But maybe they also started with just 5 minutes. So, before you decide you can’t, reevaluate what will work for you today and just build on that each day. Instead of letting the dog out in the morning, lace up your shoes and take him out for a 5 minute walk. Better yet, you both benefit from this! When you get home from work, change into your workout clothes and hop on the Peloton while you watch the news instead of slumming on the couch.

Be better than you were yesterday

The goal is not to be better than the person you see on Instagram. The goal is to just be better than you were yesterday. Now, get out there and move your body! How to build a habit with little time just takes some new thinking. If you’re struggling on where to start let’s connect more and figure out a plan to get you started.
